Solan Times covered the media coverage of New Salaam Clinic on 5 Dec 2019. Salaam Clinic recently had a grand opening of its free clinic in the Hough neighborhood. Dr. Syed P. Ashraf and Dr. Simee Malik, who are the heart and helm of the Salaam Clinic, both are Solon residents and care about their local neighborhood quite profoundly. The New Salaam Clinic has three exam rooms that are dedicated to the uninsured and underinsured community members. Dr. Syed P. Ashraf, Dr. Simee Malik, Dr. Marina Magrey, and eight other volunteering physicians, nurses, and support staff split their time manning the clinic.

Dr. Simee Malik, a pediatrician with Lake Health, said that the idea of free medical checkups for deserving members of her community was bugging her for the past 2 years. Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, other hospitals, and medical centers are nearby the Salaam Clinic, but still, people were not getting access to health care.

Dr. Syed P. Ashraf, an internal medicine specialist with Atrium Group, said that the word “Salaam” is an Arabic word which means “Peace”. Salaam Clinic is part of Salaam Cleveland, which is a social work organization and came into being after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. Local doctors vowed to provide free basic health care screening and primary care facilities because while working at well-sought hospitals and clinics, they saw that there is a gap in the system, where uninsured and underinsured people are neglected from basic medical facilities due to financial reasons.

In Solon and its suburbs, most community members are not insured or are underinsured. These people are equally valuable members of our community and they spend their whole lives without getting proper medical services. Salaam Clinic gives proper care to people who aren’t aware of which direction to take in certain medical conditions. The primary focus of Salaam Clinic is to get these people into the healthcare system. This means beginning a health chart, performing various medical screenings, and other routine exams.

Dr. Syed P. Ashraf said that they are continuously looking forward to collaborating with pharmacies, hospitals, and medical centers. They are looking for all types of collaborations, as Salaam Clinic is a primary health services clinic and cannot take mammograms and other lab tests, so they need support from hospitals as well as from the local council.

Dr. Syed P. Ashraf has long term goals for Salaam Clinic. He foresees a more holistic approach to medical services in the future. Salaam Clinic aims to offer free basic prescription medicines and medical or health education for deserving people as well.

  • Salaam Clinic of Cleveland was forced to close down in March when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the global level. It is now preparing to re-open the clinic. Salaam Clinic is based in a Bilal Community Center on Euclid Avenue, which was forced to close down; the clinic had no choice but to shut its doors. However, the untiring efforts and heartfelt pain of Salaam Clinic doctors made it possible to reopen its doors for the people in need. News 5 Cleveland covered this event on 17 May 2020.

Salaam Clinic runs under Salaam Cleveland, which is a non-profit social organization. Salaam Cleveland has recently received a grant of $25,000 from the greater Cleveland Rapid Response Fund to procure clinical items, personal protective equipment and to expand its telehealth services.

Dr. Syed Shoaib Shah, CEO of the Salaam Clinic said that these are challenging times, and people who are uninsured or underinsured need medical services more than ever. Whether we have a pandemic or not, the need for people to get medical attention and checkups will not stop. Although the Salaam Clinic has secured a grant, it’s not enough to fulfill the needs of the community, as its three main fundraisers had to be canceled.

Salaam Clinic has also started its Telehealth services to ensure the safety of every community member, and provide them proper consultations at the ease of their homes.

Salaam Clinic based in Cleveland is a vital community resource and still helping the community in the Covid-19 pandemic through telehealth services. On Sunday 26 July 2020, the Clinic conducted the pediatric wellness exams at Community Center on Euclid Avenue.

Salaam Clinic’s Chief Operating Officer Sister Mecca East says that the Salaam Clinic immediately shifted to telehealth services when the pandemic hit, and they find it a bit challenging especially when children are involved in audio and video calls. So there was a dire need of having a pediatric workshop, where children can be physically examined.

Salaam Clinic offers free medical treatment to community members who are uninsured or underinsured. The clinic’s services include well-child visits, physicals, preventive health screenings, and health education workshops.

Salaam Clinic open doors for public

In Cleveland, Ohio – Salaam Clinic had a grand opening of its new clinic at Bilal Community Center on Euclid Avenue in October 2019. Spectrum News 1 covered the event. It was a big step towards the betterment of the local community. It saddens the Doctors volunteering at Salaam Clinic that a huge number of people are not able to get proper medical services. Although Cleveland is home to various highly ranked hospitals and state-of-the-art medical centers, however, not every member of the community can afford it. Most of the uninsured and underinsured community members often have to compromise on their medical conditions.

Dr. Marina Magrey, working at MetroHealth Medical Center for 20 years, has witnessed a lot of deserving people who have been neglected from proper medical services. She has seen patients missing their appointments and when asked, their main reason is that they cannot afford the medical bills due to lack of affordable medical insurances.

Dr. P. Syed Ashraf, Dr. Simee Malik, Dr. Marina Magrey, and other doctors felt the need of having a Free Clinic for all, where all deserving members of our community can get satisfactory medical services free of cost. They wanted a centrally located place, where people don’t have to co-pay anything, also no parking fees. Salaam Clinic which is a subsidiary of Salaam Cleveland is located on the donated space on the lower level of Bilal Community Center on Euclid Avenue.

Dr. P. Syed Arshad says that the local community wants something in their neighborhood; they don’t feel comfortable going to the big medical centers. With the help of exceptional Doctors, Nurses, and support staff who donate their precious time for the betterment of the community, Salaam Clinic is able to offer most of the primary and preventive care. Dr. Syed Ashraf says that Salaam Clinic has aligned the institutions in the area and also do referrals, ancillary services, and prescriptions for the services Salaam Clinic is unable to do.

Salaam Clinic’s Chief Operating Officer Sister Mecca East says that almost 17% of the community members in Ward 7 do not have health insurance at all. She also added that Salaam Clinic also offers free health education workshops and health literacy.

Dr. Magrey says that she encourages more and more underprivileged people to get benefit from the free health clinic. She also hopes that while Salam Clinic is making a strong impact in the community, the doctors, nurses, and other practitioners should also join the Nobel cause and give back to the community.

On 9th October, Councilman Basheer Jones invited the local community for a free health & wellness check-up at the 3rd annual Imani Women’s Day of Health in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood. Spectrum News 1 covered the event.

Surely in the middle of the pandemic, hosting any event is challenging let alone a community health and wellness event. Councilman Basheer Jones said, rightly so, that the pandemic has made it even more crucial to host such events.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have been hesitant to seek medical care because of precautions. At the 3rd annual Imani Women’s Day of Health, resources were brought to residents of the Hough neighborhood in Cleveland for an annual health and wellness community check-up .

Sister Mecca East, the chief operating officer of the Salaam Clinic, was also present with free resources for the uninsured and the underinsured, as bringing services to their neighborhoods allows residents who are most at risk to be proactive about their health care. Free mammograms were scheduled for more than 30 women of the neighborhood by Salaam Clinic in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank also handed out free boxed meals to the community members at the event. Councilman Jones gave away multiple gift cards and the community members also received free primary healthcare services and wellness checks from Imani Wellness.

Pull Up Neighbor provided free food, free sanitizers, and free PPE to everyone in presence. Council Jones informed the community members about the importance and ease of early voting, Famicos Foundation provided the community members with buses to and back from Cuyahoga County’s early voting station.

Speaking to the Spectrum News 1, Sister Mecca East said:

“I know the importance of what preventative care actually means to women, especially African American women. We know that African Americans already have been consumed with a lot of major health disparities, including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease. So, COVID-19 has actually exasperated those different health conditions. So, it’s vitally important as
